英語の４技能を高める方法として、
「読む」については多読、「聞く」については、インターネットの英語サイトの利用、
「話す」については、カフェ英会話やインターネットを利用した英会話、
しかし、「書く」については、これといった有効策がないんだよね・・・・
こんなコメントを某上場企業に勤務する会社員から聞いたことがあります。
確かに、「書く」は、読んでくれる相手がいないと上達しない自習困難な技能です。
しかし、いきなり作文はできないので、
例文をまず暗唱し、構文を暗記させることで、
自然に書けるようになるとの考え方のあるようですが、
確かに否定はしません。
しかし、何かのテーマについて、自分の持てる英語力を駆使して、
英語で表現をし、それを外国人に読んでもらい、指摘を受ける・・・・
これがどうやら一番有効な方法でなないでしょうか？
英作文は人に直してもらわないと上手いきません。
指摘されて、直して、また指摘されて、また直す。
赤子が間違いながら母親から教えられることとまさに同様です。
そうは言っても、
こうしたマンツーマン指導の実現はなかなか難しいものが有ります。
特に生徒は、こうした機会が極めて少ないので、
英作文能力も十分に「伸びしろ」があるにもかかわらず、
実現できていないのは残念なことです。
そこで、弊社は、この個人的指導方式、
つまりパーソナルチュータリングシステムを
別の形で実現しようとしています。
つまり、緊密な通信指導を用いて、
あたかも体面指導方式に似た状況を作り出しています。
英作文の出来は、「練習した量＝上手くなる量」です。
とにかく書くしかありません。
さらに、せっかくのモチベーションを維持しながら、挫折しない方法も必要です。
通信指導の鬼門は、挫折のしやすさです。
所詮、人間ですから、継続性は気分や体調によって妨害もされるでしょうし、
また一度、連続性を崩すと、根気も喪失しがちでしょう。
そんな人間の弱さを考えれば、強制力や使命感を伴う環境下で、
「書く」技術を伸ばすしかありません。
故に、生徒にとって「書く」技術を訓練する場としては、
自宅よりも教室の方が適していると言えるでしょう。
故に、英作文は学校授業の中で、訓練することが良いのではないでしょうか？
しかし逆に、授業であるとすれば、マンツーマン指導が難しくなる一面もあります。
そこで、授業でありながら、マンツーマン指導が出来る方式を弊社で考案しました。
来週は、そのあたりについて触れていきます。

私たち日本人が外国へ訪れると、街の中で不思議で不適切な日本語に出会うことがありませんか？
同じように、外国人(この場合、英語のネイティブスピーカー等)が、
日本の街中で不思議で不適切な英語表現を見ることもあるのではないでしょうか？
そんな事例をここで紹介いたします。
今回は、あるお寿司屋さんに掲げられた掲示版です。

意味が良く分からないのですが、
どうやら、テイクアウトの場合は普通と違うようです。
ここは、シンプルに下記の通り訂正案を考えてみました。

Hello and
hope all is well with you. It
certainly is getting colder out there,
isn’t it?
All’s the more reason to snuggle up with the nearest and dearest
and generate
some good old fashioned body heat, that and plenty of hugs and
kisses. We all need to hug and kiss from time to
time, at least where I come
from we do,
it’s just the done thing in the UK because it’s a healthy and
affectionate
form of physical interaction between humans that best represents
the meaning
of love or whatever it’s called.
In Japan it’s quite different, Japanese people
don’t openly kiss, hug and
show
affection towards one another because it’s not part of the culture and
when they see
others, doing it; namely Japanese that have lived abroad and
picked up the
custom or foreigners that do it as a matter of course, it gets
mixed
reactions. From my experience, some
Japanese people, the ones that
are a bit
western culture savvy, look at me when I hug and kiss my wife and
kids in the
street and they generally give me looks of approval. I have even
had one
oldish woman come up to me and say how much she envied seeing the
hugging and
kissing taking place – she told my wife in Japanese what a nice
family we
seemed and she then started to reminisce a bit about when she was
a young
woman. She told us how much
watching old American, British and
French
matinee movies had influenced her towards wanting to marry a
foreigner or
marry a Japanese man that was romantically inclined – so much
for the power
of movies. Unfortunately, her words
not mine, she ended up
marrying a
regular run of the mill salary man of the domestic flavour and
things did
not quite work out as she’d hoped – the things you get to find out, eh…….
I have had situations where the disapproving
set, yes, they are everywhere
aren’t they?,
have come up to me and told me to be more respectful of Japanese
customs and
traditions, which was obviously an indirect way of telling me or
my family to
stop what we were doing. I even had
one old guy come up and
remind me of
the old adage ‘When in Rome do as the Roman’s do” – I obviously
understood
what he wanted to say, but he should have really said “When in
Japan do as
the Japanese do” because we all know what the Romans got up
to, don’t
we?
Although my wife is
Japanese she grew up inside quite a liberal family, she
did not get hugged and
kissed on a regular basis, actually not at all as far
as I know, but being
exposed to foreign ways of doing things as she was
growing up and having a
mum and dad that were basically into anything
and everything western
helped her to adapt to the hugging and kissing
culture very easily when
we got married. With that said, on
the
occasions when we did
get approached by the disapproving set my wife
would basically tell
them to politely mind their own business and explain
that were not hurting
anyone by doing what we were doing.
This morning
when I took my daughter
Emma to school I gave her the usual big hug and
smacker (big kiss) on
the side of the cheek, and after doing so waited until
she entered the school
gates. As I was waiting one young
boy in my
daughter’s class whom I
know quite well, young Daisuke, went running
up to Emma and in
Japanese wanted to know why her daddy had just done
what he’d done. I heard my daughter tell him that it was
normal in her
family, and that she
also felt a bit embarrassed by it sometimes. Hearing
this comment made me
feel a bit sad in a way because if I were taking my
daughter to school in
the UK and if I didn’t hug and kiss her I would be seen
to be a bit odd or a bit
cold. In this case, in Japan, I am
seen to be strange,
but in a slightly
different light which to be honest does not bother me at all.
Showing affection, as we
all know, is really important in helping to develop
a balanced character and
I for one am not going to stop hugging and
kissing my kids, I want
the tradition to continue inside my family long
after I fall off the end
of what I hope will be a fairly long pier.
Anyway, enough from me
this week – no poetry to tag on the end of this
– I’m off home early.

■このコーナーでは、日常の学校で教職員の方が遭遇するかもしれないシーンにおける
「とっさのひとこと」を英語で言えるように養成します。
もちろん読者様の中には、
英語科の先生方も多くいらっしゃるかと存じますが、是非ともご参加下さい。
ご承知の通り、市販の英会話の本の中には、
ネイティブスピーカーの目から見て、不適切な表現が少なくありません。
しかし、そうは言っても、日本人である私達がそれを見抜くのは容易ではないため、
本の中の例文を機械的に必死に覚えようとしてしまいます。
そもそも、実際に外国人と英会話をするためには、
英会話の本を読むだけ(暗記するだけ)では不十分であり、
実際に、会話（使用・応用）して、初めてモノにできると言えるでしょう。
またさらに言うと、単に使うだけもまだ不十分で、
間違ったり、忘れたり思い出したりが繰り返されて、初めて自分のモノになるのではないでしょうか？
人はすぐに覚えたモノほど、直ぐに忘れるものですし、考えた数だけ記憶は増えますし、
苦労して覚えたものほど忘れにくいモノであることは、
これまでの皆様の学習経験からご承知の通りです。
このコーナーでは、問題文とその対訳を安易に併記する方法を廃しまして、
とりあえずご自身の今の英語力を駆使して悩みながら答えを紡ぎ出して頂くという手法を
採らせて頂きました。
故に各質問には、特定の模範回答を用意しておりませんし、
模範解答の紹介をもって暗記を促すつもりもありません。
解答パターンは、読者様の数だけ存在しますし、様々な言い方が可能なので、
どうか気軽にご回答をお送り下さい。
おそらくは、短くセンテンスで解答することも十分可能でしょうが、
せっかくですから、是非、ご自身の英語表現力を試す意味で、
「長めの英作文」で挑戦されることをお勧めいたします。

■ある学習塾の元講師だった公立高校の英語の先生とハナシをしました。
彼曰く、
「学習塾が教科書から離れて、多方面で発展的な指導が出来るのは、
学校が教科書に基づいたきちんとした基礎基本を
教えているからです。」
「従って、もし学校がこれを教えていなかったら、
学習塾は受験に特化した指導はできていないし、
そもそも進学に必要な学習内容は、
学校の授業の中で十分に教えていなければなりません。」
「学校で同じ授業を受ける以上は、
すべての生徒は進学用の学力があると見なせるはずであり、
その意味で言えば、生徒間における「学力の格差」とは、
「受験に関係する知識の格差」に過ぎないと言えるのではないでしょうか？」
「不景気がもたらす貧富の差が、
こうした格差を助長していると言われる昨今、
富めるものが入試の有利になるという入試問題の出題の仕方に
