〓 ２．リンクインシステムセミナーを開催しました(その５) 〓
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
今週の１２日(金)におきまして、弊社開発の新英語教育システム「リンクインシステム」の
体験セミナーを開催いたしました。ご多忙な時期にも関わらず、学校関係者様並びに教育業
界の方にご参加いただけましたこと、厚く御礼申し上げます。
弊社開発の新英語教育システムの「リンクインシステム」とは、従来バラバラに行われて
いた日本人英語教師の英語授業と外国人英語教師の英語授業を「効果的・最大限に」組み合
わせることで、従来の学校の枠組みを阻害することなく、日本の英語授業に欠落しがちな４
技能(読む・聞く・話す・書く)を統合させた理想の英語授業を実現させるシステムです。
先週に引き続き、寄せられた参加者様からの声をご紹介いたします。

「私は都内某女子中高一貫校で英語教師をしております。今回のセミナーに初めて参加しま
して、リンクインシステムにつき、理解ができましたし、大いにその理念に賛同しています。
もともと、私自身が「日本人英語教師が先に教え、外国人教師が後から理解を深めるような
進め方が、日本の中学校・高校での英語教育にとって理想的だとイメージしてました。実は
自分の学校でもこのシステムに似た英語授業を試みていますが、様々な理由で十分な機能に
は至っていません。しかし、今回のセミナーで、それが具体化され実際に学校で機能してい
るケースを初めて見ることができました。その点で自分にとって大変参考になりました。今
まで、自分自身が学校の実務が多忙でなかなかセミナーのへ参加ができませんでしたが、３
学期のこの時期にきてようやく参加することができました。今までのたび重なるセミナーへ
の招待に大変感謝しております。」

〓 ３．日本の中の不思議な英語表現(その８) 〓

私たち日本人が外国に訪れてみると、街の中で不思議で不適切な日本語に出会うことがあ
りませんか？同じように、外国人が日本の中で不思議で不適切な英語表現を見ることもある
でしょう。そんな事例をここでご紹介いたします。宇都宮市にあるクリーング屋さんが英語
で店頭広告を出しております。日本語の併記もあり、どちらも何となくニュアンスはわかる
のですが、文意としては意味を成していません。
(日本語版)「当店は“洗う”にこだわりを持ちラベンダーのように癒されるお店を作ります！」
(英語版) I have
feelings toward saying that I “Wash” it and pray a visitor for it being
loved healed air
space such as fragrance of a lavender by the making of , a visitor.
英語版は全く解読ができませんので、日本語版の持つ意図を汲み取りつつ、一から作り
直してみました。それが以下の赤字文です。

〓 ４．スティーブン自叙伝(第１３話その４) 〓
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

A day in the life of
being me at about 9 years old continued.
Riding
my bike to school was something I genuinely enjoyed doing because it was
fun.
It was
fun because every morning I could free wheel down quite a long sloping bridge,
true
I had
to climb the bridge in the first place, but because I knew that there was a
reward at
the end
of climbing it, the climb was something that I always looked forward to.
Of course
I had
to be careful free wheeling on my way down because there would sometimes be
people
walking up the bridge, I just had to get my timing right which is what I
generally
managed
to do. I never had any accidents, but I was once caught by a policemen
and
cautioned,
he told me that if he saw me free wheeling down the bridge again he would take
me to
the police station and I would be in big trouble. I must admit it did
deter me from
doing
it for a short while, but the temptation and desire to get back to free
wheeling
quickly
overrode the fear of getting caught and life was good again.
The
bridge was over a railway track and it was actually called Kingsway Bridge
which
incidentally
was part of the name of my school, Kingsway Primary School was the school
I biked
to 5 days a week from being 7 years old to 11 years old. On a few
occasions I can
remember
pushing my bike up the bridge as a train was passing under it which was a bit
hairy
because the bridge would shake and vibrate like hell and at times seem like it
was
going
to collapse, but it did not and it is still standing as far as I
know. The biggest
problem
for me were the big packs of stray dogs that used to regularly congregate at
the
mouth
of the bridge. These chaps were pretty frightening, they were all
mongrels that
lived
off food that they would find in dustbins and in peoples’ gardens, they were
probably
carrying all sorts of disease, they were under nourished and looking to sink
their
teeth into a nice bit of human flesh at the earliest possible opportunity, at
least
that is
what I thought at the time. I used to pass them with caution and try not
to look
at them
as I passed by, this approach worked for me, they never really bothered me,
but I
was frightened of them. Every school morning I used to hope and pray that
they
would
not be there waiting, but the more I hoped and prayed the bigger the problem
seemed
to become, one morning I counted 19 dogs at the mouth of the bridge – Was I
finally
going to get attacked? Had I just been lucky up to this point?
Should I turn
around
and go another way. These were all questions that must have been going
through my mind at the time.
On
this particular morning I was with two friends and I can remember having to
pass
through a fair bit of barking and growling, as well as snarling, with one dogs
actually
s napping at my friends leg, the skin was not broken, but there were teeth
marks
so as soon as he got to school he went to the nurse’s office and a teacher took
him to
the hospital for a tetanus jab. After that incident the dogs were
reported to
the
council by the headmaster of my school and shortly after they were taken away
by the
local dog catcher, so the story goes, they were all put down – dogs never
bothered us after that.
Upon
entering the school gates we would get off our push bikes and push them
the
rest of the way to the bike park, the bike park was at the back of the school
just
in
front of my classroom at the time. My homeroom teacher at 9 years old at
Kingsway
was a Mrs Burroughs, she was a portly woman, she was in her fifties at
the
time and she was very strict, but I liked here and so did my class mates
because
although
she was strict she was fair, and she knew how to have a bit of fun at the
right
time. I can remember being very interested in maths at school as a nine
year
old,
this quickly changed later on in years mind you, but at nine I was well into
maths.
My interest probably had a lot to do with the fact that Ms Burroughs liked
music
and all the multiplication table practice we did was chant based and
rhythmical.
She used to get myself and my class mates to chant really loudly,
occasionally
to the point where another teacher would come in to ask her to calm it
down a
bit. I can clearly remember that happening on one or two occasions, maybe
she did
get carried away at times and land herself in a spot of bother, but my
classmates
and I respected her for it and we reacted well to her style of teaching.
She got
some good results which always went down well with parents. She was
very
popular with parents and kids alike, but I think she had a problem or two with
the
other teachers in the school which finally forced her to quit her job, but that
was a
fair
few years after I had graduated. I like to think that her legacy somewhat
continues
on inside the job I do, the way she helped me to learn is very similar to
way I
teach my kids how to learn, I use chant and rhythm to teach English the same
as she
used to teach me maths. All that loud interest and passion filled
chanting
I did
in my primary school maths classes actually made me very good at reciting my
multiplication
tables and adding and subtracting, I responded to the interest,
energy,
passion and desire that Ms Burroughs put into her teaching and I think a
lot of
other kids in my class did as well. Ms Burroughs is actually one of the
teachers
that I modeled myself on when I became a teacher and I think that if I had
not
have met someone like her during my school days I would perhaps not have
become
a teacher. I would certainly not have had the inspiration to apply the
methods
I learned from being taught by her into my teaching practices and and
teaching development work.
The
teaching and learning part was fine, well almost fine. What I mean by
almost
fine is I had to sit next to a girl, we all had to sit next to girls because
that
was
obviously part of teaching bonding skills and of course sitting next to a girl
never bothered
me, but in Ms Burroughs class it did. It bothered me because I
sat
next to Janet Smith. Now Janet Smith was quite a famous young girl and
famous
for all the wrong reasons. Janet peed her pants and she peed them every
day,
she sometimes would have little pools of urine on her chair that would
gradually
get
soaked up into her dress or whatever clothes she was wearing as she moved
around
on her chair. All the other kids in the class would make fun of Janet and
of me
because I sat next to her. Ms Burroughs knew Janet had a bit of a week
bladder
and was under strict instructions from her parents to keep spare pairs of
underpants
in her desk drawer, in readiness for the 3/4 times Janet would christen
her
pants during the day, yes, 3/4 times a day Janet would let go. I am not
sure if
anyone
reading this story experienced anything similar to this when they were growing
up, but
ammonia as we all know is a very strong smell and when you are around it or
sitting
next to it as I was all day, 5 days a week for a full year, I would go home
smelling
of
urine myself, I kid you not. At first my parents thought it was me that
was peeing
my
pants because the smell I was taking home with me was so strong.

■先日、ある本を読んでいたら面白い仮説がありましたので、皆さんへご紹介いたします。
「日本は借金づけだ！」と世間ではよく言われています。実際、皆さんも同じ認識をお持ち
だと思いますが、本当にそうなのでしょうか？日本政府の借金である国債の９３％はなんと
日本国内で消化されています。そうなると、日本国債は日本の金融機関・企業・国民が買っ
ていると言えますので、広い意味での日本国民が日本国債を買っていると言えるでしょう。
つまり、日本政府はほとんどの借金を日本国民から借りているということになります。では、
借金をしている日本政府とは一体何でしょうか？言うまでもなく、政府は日本国民から選ば
れた国会議員がさらに総理大臣を選び、内閣を組織し政府を代表していますので、国民代表
者が日本政府であると言えます。整理しますと、日本国民の代表が日本国民に借金をしてい
る構図になる訳です。その債権者とも言うべき、日本国民は２００４年の１億２７７９万人
をピークに減少に転じています。試算によれば、２９７５年には人口増加数が１名になるよ
うです。つまり、この年に最後の日本人が生まれるということになります。２０１０年現在
は、１．２億人の国民と日本政府は全く別個の人格と解されていますが、２９７５年以降で
は、国民と政府は同一人格(一体)になる予定です。したがって、最後の日本人は、日本政府
として相当巨額な負債を抱えていると同時に、日本国民として相当巨額な国債という資産を
有していることになるでしょう。つまり、最後の日本人は右手のポケットに負債、左手のポ
ケットに資産を有しているので、将来は結局、相殺可能になる見通しです。もっとも、資産
の方が余れば小遣い、運悪く負債が上回れば自身への取りたてを諦めればいいだけのハナシ
です。「将来の世代にツケを残すな！」と世間ではよく言われていますが、ツケを後回しし
続けた後の究極的な最後は一体どうなるのか？という議論があまりされてない風潮で、この
本の仮説にはインパクトを感じました。
■先週のメルマガで取り上げたワシントン条約締結国会議の件です。クロマグロの輸出禁止
の採択阻止に関して、当初劣勢が予想された日本勢でしたが、日本側の説得によってこの否
決には、日本への同調してくれる国からの支持を取り付け、１８日の採決では大差で否決に
持ち込むことができまして、クロマグロ漁獲量の８割を消費する日本にとっては朗報となっ
ております。これだけを見ると、日本国の英語での外交能力の賜物という見方ができそうで
すが、どうやら真相は違うようです。欧米にはロビイストという職種が確立しています。ロ
ビイストとは、依頼主にとって有利な法案や政策を実現させるため議会や政府や世論に働き
かけをする代理人、いわば陳情代理人のことです。ある報道によれば、かねてから日本政府
の英語外交能力の頼りなさを見抜いていた「日本かつお・まぐろ漁業協同組合」が、会議開
始に先立つ３月初めの段階から、あるアメリカ人ロビイストを頼ることで、日本政府団によ
る交渉活動とは別に彼によって多数派工作がなされていた模様です。非公式な外交ルートで
の説得工作と反対票確保のために、同協会が彼に対してどのくらいの報酬や見返りが約束し
たのか不明ですが、ともかくも採択の行方に危機感をもった日本の民間団体が、鈍感な日本
政府に先んじて打った手が功を奏したようです。今回の採択結果は広く日本国民へ安堵感を
もたらしてくれましたが、その一方で、国益を守るために、日本人は自国政府よりもわざわ
ざ他国の陳情人へ依存しなくてはならないほど英語交渉能力に欠落しているという事実も同
時にもたらしてくれたような気がします。
